The Story Behind The Name

Can you guess the meaning behind our blog’s name?

Many have wondered and many still wonder how we came up with the name for our project, which is “Pins & Points”.

A few hints from the actual title are enough to understand half of the meaning, but there is another meaning to it, of which only a hand full of people know about. Can you guess what that is?

Now that you gave it a try, are you curious to know what

“Pins & Points” really stands for?

When we first started looking for a name for our project, all we could think of were names that include the usual words related to travel, such as: “traveler”, “wander”, “backpacking, “couple”, “journey” and so on.

However, there are so many travel blog names out there that are made up of these words, so we felt we have to come up with something more personal, something with a deeper meaning.

So we started writing on a piece of paper random names that would pop into our minds, which we thought would suit us best. The moment we wrote down “Pins & Points” we instantly knew that this will be the one we’ll stick to. It made the most sense to us.

Scroll down to find out why.

The obvious meaning

The Pins

As you may have probably already guessed it has something to do with places that you pin on the map. It is common practice, when you plan out your trip itinerary, to look at a map and choose your preferred destinations and the places you want to visit.

What do you do after that? You mark them using PINS. That’s to remember where your favorite places are and to get a better view of your whole itinerary.

The Points

Obviously, POINTS means those places on the map that you want so much to visit. Either you pin physical pins on a physical map, or virtual ones on a digital map, the process and the outcome will be the same.

You’ll have a better view of all your points of interest and itinerary. Now, this is the first step to planning your trip and maybe the most exciting one.

This is because you have yet to spend a penny, but your imagination and the anticipation are already placing you on that journey. And even though our RTW trip was not about planning our next destination in too much detail, we still used to pinpoint places all the time.

Once we’d arrive in a new country, we’d meet so many travelers and locals who would always recommend places. So we’d always pin them on Google Maps in order to not forget them.

The Deeper Meaning

That was easy to guess, right? 🙂 However, if it would be just that it would lack personality. It needs something to give it a deeper meaning. So here you have the other half of the story.

The secret meaning behind the name

For this, we need to go back in time, all the way to 2008. That’s when we first set foot outside Europe. Our then destination – the U.S. of A.

We went there with a “Work and Travel” program during the summer holidays. We had been selected to work in a theme park and to be more precise, at Hard Rock Park.

And honestly, it still counts as both, one of the best summer holidays and one of the best workplaces so far!

Ok now, back to our story. Before even reaching the USA, we attended an interview in Romania, with one of Hard Rock Park’s HR agent. At that same interview, we received our very first pin badge.

Little did we know at the time that, that small enamel pin will enable this passion for collecting pins from all over the world.

Our Pin Collection

By now, we are sure that you’ve got an idea of how the rest of the story goes. We started collecting pins from all the places we visit around the world. Ending up with a personalised collection of one of the tiniest, lightest souvenirs we can find and carry.

Perfect for a long term journey and limited luggage space. And not to mention that each of the pins we collect has a unique design and its very own story.

Handful of pin badges

They all have a story

For example, getting our hands on a pin in Cuba was really hard work. It was just one of those places where finding a pin took more time and patience then we initially thought it would.

Maybe our luck was just avoiding us. But right when we were about to give up, we found it…our luck and with it, the pin.

And there you have it…

   …the story behind the name.

To sum it up, this is how the PINS we’ve gathered from all the POINTS (places) we’ve been to around the world, became part of this travel project of ours.
